Nothing ruins a quiet evening or a busy morning like half the house suddenly losing power. If your safety switch (RCD) has tripped, you're probably asking two questions: Why did this happen? and How do I fix it?
First, the good news: your safety switch is doing its job. It's designed to shut off power in milliseconds to protect you and your family from severe electric shock or electrical fires.
However, resetting it isn’t always as simple as flicking the switch back on. If it trips again immediately, follow this simple step-by-step diagnostic guide to find the culprit before calling an electrician.
Common Reasons a Safety Switch Trips
Before diving into troubleshooting, it helps to understand what usually causes a safety switch to activate:
A Faulty Appliance
A kettle, fridge, or toaster with an internal electrical fault.
Nuisance Tripping (Overloaded Circuit)
Too many high-draw appliances running at the same time on one circuit.
Damaged Wiring or Outlets
Faulty power points, pest damage inside walls, or water ingress.

Try this simple process to narrow down the issue.
Safety First
Never attempt to touch exposed wiring, open your main switchboard cover, or force a safety switch to stay up if it resists. Always keep yourself and your family safe.
Step 1: Attempt a Quick Reset
Head to your switchboard and flick the safety switch back to the ON position.
If it stays on: It may have been a temporary surge or a transient glitch. Keep an eye on it.
If it trips immediately: Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Unplug (Don't Just Turn Off) Everything on the Circuit
Identify which part of the house lost power. Go to all the power points in those rooms and unplug every single appliance.
Tip: Turning the outlet switch off is often not enough. You must physically pull the plug out of the wall, as neutral-to-earth faults can still trip the switch even when the outlet is turned off.
